Eight Secrets to Success on Twitter

With over 200 million accounts with a projected growth to add another 26 million users before the end of 2012 and 350 million tweets per day, you may have realised that Twitter is a force to be reckoned with. But how to go about it? How do you use Twitter to grow your business?

Twitter is simple to use and easy to understand. As a Twitter user, you send a "tweet" to your followers: a message that is no longer than 140 characters, also known as micro-blogging. Your tweets appear in their feed, and your tweets appear in your followers' feeds. You can share what you had for lunch, where you had coffee this morning and with whom, and your followers will read about it. Businesses can tweet about their products or services, breaking news, or post interesting headlines with a link back to their website.

Here are some things you can do to get started:

Register an easily recognisable name for those who know you

As you can only send messages that contain 140 characters, you can't include your name or signature so you need to be clever with your name so that your followers recognise you. You therefore need to put a good deal of thought into it. If you have a brand or company name, you need to use that. Your profile needs to be interesting to attract followers Your Twitter page needs to give the prospect a reason to follow you. It therefore needs to be interesting and contain your magnet offer.

Start posting

Post interesting, entertaining and clear messages in 140 characters. Make sure you engage with your followers. Promote your Twitter account Your Twitter account can be promoted widely by connecting it to your website, blog, YouTube page, and other social networking and bookmarking sites. Use it in your contact details, and even on your business card.

Avoid marketing only messages

If you only send marketing and sales messages, your followers will grow weary of following you and unfollow in a heartbeat. You need to have informative and useful tweets mainly.

Start following others

You need to follow others as well, so search for topics that interest you and start following people who post there. They may then look at your profile and follow you in return. Make sure though, that you don't suddenly start following huge numbers of people as you will be seen as a spammer. Also: free accounts have a 2000 follow limit and it can be difficult to engage with everyone if you have more followers.

Don't post too often

With Twitter, less is more. If you post too often, people may get tired of your messages. So posting three to four times a day is enough.

Posting regularly keeps you in their mind

This is what you want: to keep in their minds. So don't forget to post for weeks on end, but do post daily and become part of their lives.

Reply to your followers

As Twitter is all about interacting, reply to those who comment on your post and make direct comments to someone if you enjoy reading their posts. Don't forget to enable email notifications so that you don't miss anything.

Find a way to post videos, pictures and links

You can use multimedia on Twitter with special websites that create Twitter feeds like hellotxt.com. If you do, your followers will have interesting content from you that they will enjoy.

If you apply these principles, you will enjoy greater results from Twitter.
