Six Key Business Mindsets For Success

What's the one trait that makes entrepreneurs stand out from the rest of the world? Persistence. I can't think of a more fitting image of persistence than our friend here the woodpecker. Creating and sustaining a business takes persistence above and beyond the normal challenges of day to day living. You can make learning persistence easier on yourself by changing your perspective. Here are six key mindsets to adopt:

Accept that there are no shortcuts: Starting a business is going to be a process, and processes take time. Going slowly allows you time to make sure that all your fundamentals are in place. Take the time to thoroughly brainstorm your idea, even before you get to the research stage. Don't just think about it--write it down. You'll be concretely solving problems before they arise, and you'll be glad to have the document to refer to later.

Focus on a sustainable process: The reason you're giving yourself time is so that you can build something you can continue to grow down the road. Thorough brainstorming, creating a strategic vision plan (using your Perfect Day as a basis), research (yes, research CAN be fun)--these are all fundamentals that will give you the base you need to succeed. Skip them and you may have to do them down the line anyway, which may slow or stall your business growth at a critical time.Make friends with the process: No matter what industry you're in, the things you need to do to set up a successful business are the same. However, following the process once through doesn't guarantee success. Expect to circle through some of the same steps again and again as you find your niche and develop your product or service.

Make friends with the process, and then nurture that friendship. Work the process until you can't work it any longer. Work the process until you reach your goals.

Think big--but act now: Act from where you are. Incremental success is still success, and each step forward creates another step. It's not about just getting to the market, it's about staying in the market. Many enthusiastic entrepreneurs are so keen on creating the perfect product that they forget to create a product at all. Take what action you can take now, and then worry about the next step.

Know that you'll get there: If you're going to do something, do it. Don't stop. What you put into something is what you're going to get out of it. Putting something in consistently, every day, is going to increase your chances of the return you're looking for. Regular and persistent effort will eventually get you where you're going. Just remember that this isn't a sprint, it's a marathon.

Stop obsessing: Every action that you take will move your business forward, but every time you stop to think about the consequences of every little action, it stops you from being able to do anything. This goes for both successes and failures. Don't paralyze yourself with overthinking. Learn from what you do, but don't get stuck there. Now the fun part…share your comments, advice, or which of these Mindsets you'regoing to try out.
