Nine Tips for Designing Your Asset Tag

Asset tags are essential to control and identify your company and personal assets. They can be easily sourced from online stores, frequently using ready-to-go templates which can be adjusted to suit your own custom needs. This said, they are also frequently missing important information so we've put together the top nine tips to get the most out of your asset label purchase and make life simpler and easier for you.

Tip One

Select which assets you are going to label. This may seem obvious and straight forward, but if you arrange your assets into different categories by use or application you will be able to select an asset label which will best suit your needs. For instance, all assets which are used or stored outdoors will need a robust label which is capable of withstanding environmental factors such as rain and exposure to sunlight which will cause fading or damage to the asset tag.

Tip Two

Choose the right size asset tag or label. Depending on what you are tagging and where the asset will be used, you need to make sure you have the correct sizing. If you are using an asset tag to help secure your ownership rights, you need to make sure it is highly visible (same applies if you are applying a warning sign). On the other hand, you don't want a large asset tag if you are applying them to small sized, frequently used items.

Tip Three

Add a title to the asset tag as this provides important information to alert the reader to what information is contained. For instance. "PROPERTY OF XYZ COMPANY" or "WARNING - HAZARDOUS" are good examples.

Tip Four

Use color coding to help you readily classify your assets. Use a red color coded tag for assets used by sales and marketing, a blue one for items which are not to be removed from the premises or workplace and so on. Alternatively, you can use color coding as part of your acquisition and disposal cycle, so you can readily see how old items are and what needs to be replaced in accordance with your company policy or safety rules.

Tip Five

Use sequential numbering for your asset tags which will let you track your assets and inventory.

Tip Six

Use barcodes to contain more information which can be readily read by a scanner and integrated with your computer network. This will increase your productivity by merging information in with your accounting and CRM systems.

Tip Seven

Always be Selling! Include your brand identity and logo so everyone knows who you are and who this equipment or item belongs to.

Tip Eight

Select the right material and adhesive for your asset tag. We mentioned earlier that if you are using assets outdoors, you will need a robust tag to cope with the elements, but you may also need a robust tag if you are working in harsh environments indoors, say on a factory floor. At the same time, you want an asset tag which is not easily removed or tampered with if you are using them to secure your assets.

Tip Nine

Apply your asset tags properly. Clean the spot where a tag will be placed so the adhesive gets a good hold, and make sure you are placing the tags where they will be properly seen, but do not interfere with using the asset or item.
