The Various Roles For A Nurse In Business

Copyright (c) 2012 Nurse Entrepreneur Network

While people often think of the medical profession as something apart from other types of businesses, that fact is that every doctor's office, hospital, lab testing facility and rehabilitation clinic is a business like any other. The people who work in medicine expect to profit from their work, and they often do very well. Nurses are one of the primary components of the medical profession, without whom much of the life saving work would simply not get done. The employment opportunities for a nurse in business are many and varied, and can provide both financial reward and personal satisfaction.

Hospitals

The location most often associated with nurses is a hospital. Nurses perform many vital functions at hospitals. The work they will do will depend on their training and the area of the hospital they work in. Some might be assigned to the general care rooms, where non-critical patents are located. Others might work in higher stress environments like the emergency room or the ICU (intensive care unit). Those who want to help children might be assigned to pediatrics.

Because nurses have to be available to patients around the clock in a hospital, many nurses have to work late night or even all night shifts. In addition, these shifts often change at the last minute. Also, if there is an emergency a nurse has to be prepared to be called in at a moment's notice.

Doctors' Offices

For nurses, the work in a doctor's office is very different than it is in a hospital primarily because the patients (in a doctor's office) rarely present immediate, life threatening symptoms. In fact, the goal of a patient visiting a doctor's office is to prevent relatively minor problems from becoming more serious. While some nurses work in offices where surgery is performed, this is rarely serious in nature.

Nurses in a doctor's office will check patient vitals and weight, give injections, prepare rooms for procedures and assist in minor in-office surgery. They will also make calls to patients, doctors, hospitals and insurance companies. These nurses spend a lot of time carrying out administrative functions, such as maintaining an updating records and ordering supplies.

Rehabilitation Clinics

Another role for a nurse in business is as part of the staff at a rehabilitation clinic. Physical rehabilitation is a key part of helping a patient who has been sick or injured recover part or all of the physical abilities they had before, or to at least keep things from getting worse. Nurses can help the rehabilitation therapists prepare patients and check their vitals. They can also prepare the rooms and the equipment that will be used.

Home Care Services

Because many people do not like to leave their homes to live in nursing homes, there are a growing number of companies that provide at home care for the sick or elderly. These companies often hire nurses to visit these patients to attend to their medical needs and to evaluate their condition. If the patient's condition becomes such that the patient is no longer safe continuing with at home care, the nurse will report this so that other arrangements can be made.
