Can Your Business Afford Not To Have An Effective Online Presence Anymore?

What not to do with your (new) website!

The website for businesses has become an essential. The website is the 'showroom', where people go to find out about your business and your products or services.

Visitors go to the website for a reason - they are focused in what they want and are looking for, but their attention span is limited. This is what companies, most especially start up companies, need to focus on. Quite simply, know your target audience.

It is essential that firstly you are aware what it is that a client or prospective client would be looking for when going to your site. In this way, you can offer them the service or information quickly and at ease. If you do not spend time understanding your client, the chances are that you will lose customers both new and existing and your business will suffer in return.

Many start up companies are in a rush to design their site, focusing on the fun part, and lose sight of what keeps a company going - the client. Research and question and only then, design with the answers front of mind.

Make the website a simple one to understand. Websites that are too convoluted with pretty or impressive designs, may be just that; pretty, impressive, wow factor. However, if the content is not accessible and there is no call to action, then all the flashiness goes to waste - it is money spent, as well as money lost.

A grave mistake that many make is paying perhaps too little for a cheap website to be the result. The 'judging a book by its cover' adage comes to mind here, as people will do just that. If your website is cheap people will think that the company is not serious about their product, or that the product or service is inferior. This is not to say you have to go and pay an exorbitant amount of money for a web designer, but it is worth the while to look around, see the portfolio of work that has been created, the clients that they work with and the overall results and package. You may begin by choosing the cheapest quote, however the long term will mean less money generated, more money spent.

Essential advice for any company starting up a website, is to keep the content fresh! Content that is stale is bad for the website for many reasons. Walking into a shop and seeing the same product every single time, means that eventually, at some point you will stop going to the shop. Why? Because there is nothing there that you have not seen. Apply this to your website - when the website stops being updated, the client new or existing, will stop clicking on to your site. There is nothing there for them to see! Adding to this, the general thought in instances where the site is not updated is 'are they in trouble?'.

Lastly, people love the internet as it is convenient, saves time and easy. So do not have a website that is difficult and laborious to use. Many sites love forms and registration processes that go on and on for pages - if you can, steer clear of this!
