Flood defences are very simple when you think about it. Basically anything that holds back water flow is ideal for protection in the event of a flood. Unfortunately there are few things that can actually do the task effectively, efficiently, and cost effectively. The real difficulty with halting floods had to do with the ability to quickly install the flood protection before the flood actually happens. Most of the time floods occur with little warning to the community and surrounding area, so flood defense equipment that can quickly be transported and deployed is the same now as it was centuries ago.
The easiest to use piece of flood protection equipment is the trusty sandbag. Sandbags have the ability to be stored flat and take up little space, and are easily transported to the area of the flood. All that needs to be done is for a network of individuals to locate a source of sand to be able to fill these bags when there is an impending flood. Nowadays, there is a simple solution to sandbags that is easier than storing flat sandbags and filling them up with sand: instant sandbags. These sandbags can fill with water within minutes, making it unnecessary to actually fill the bags with sand at the right time.
Most other flood defenses need to be arranged in advance to set them up properly. Door guards are one alternative that can be fitted into stores and retail locations easily.
Among other types of flood defences are equipment known as seal tape, which can be a handy way to shore up cracks in windows and vents, making sure that water can't seep through loosely fitting areas. There are other worthwhile investments when it comes to flood protection, including seals that are specially made for toilet seats, as well as air brake covers which can provide additional protection to households in low-lying areas that are prone to flood damage. It should be noted that even when residences are completely protected against floods, water has the ability to come from sewage systems that can flood homes from drainage systems. In these instances, toilet seals are effective in protecting against this type of water damage.
While significantly more expensive, levies provide a proven way to prevent flood damage from entering into communities. While the building of levies needs to be thought out, planned and deployed well in advance, they offer excellent protection when it comes to keeping water away from communities entirely so that other measures do not have to be taken. In low-lying areas where floods can have devastating effects just after a hard rain, not employing a levy system can have devastating effects, the likes of which can nearly destroy small towns.
