Olympic Spirit Reaches Residents At Windsor Lodge Retirement Development

Those buying a new-build retirement home can benefit from more than simply independent, secure, maintenance-free living, as owners at Churchill Retirement Living's Windsor Lodge in Princes Risborough are finding out.

Community has always been an important part of Churchill Retirement Living developments, with the Owner's Lounge a central part of any site, and at Windsor Lodge residents have a new reason for gathering in their Lounge each week: Chair Fit exercise sessions being run by Liz Chisnall, a qualified teacher of yoga and gentle exercise. For the last six months, about a dozen owners have gathered once a week for about 45 minutes of gentle but effective exercises. The exercises are done mainly, but not exclusively, either on a chair or using a chair as support, and each session has three areas of focus: mobility, strength and confidence.

The "Chair Fit Olympians", as Liz calls them, are showing plenty of progress. After the first three months, it was found that strength, mobility and confidence had increased all round. She says: "They are all very engaged with their exercises and I must say they are a surprisingly robust group. In September we had about 20 minutes of movement with rests. Now we've increased to 30 minutes."

Chair Fit group member Doreen Hammond, "a regular keep-fitter" before she moved to Windsor Lodge, is enjoying this new kind of fitness: "It's quite gentle, but it's designed to use the muscles we don't really use properly, such as wrists and ankles. Liz is very positive and knows each person's little difficulties, and always gives us lots of praise. I'm sure it's good for us."

It seems that the sessions are a lot of fun too. Doreen says there is always "lots of laughing" and Liz says that after the sessions end everyone stays on to chat. She is impressed by how well the owners at Windsor Lodge get on, and by the fun they have together, planning outings and events, and says she is seeing first hand how group activity is beneficial for both body and soul.

Windsor Lodge comprises 46 one- and two-bedroom, self-contained apartments, specially designed for retirees, with security features such as a video-entry system, a 24-hour emergency telephone system, and on-site lodge manager. Communal features for these new homes in Buckinghamshire include a guest suite and landscaped gardens. Like all Churchill Retirement Living developments, Windsor Lodge is within a few minutes' walk of the town centre shops and facilities. Prices for these new-build homes range from £219,950 to £355,950.
