Entrepreneurs Can Benefit From Bookkeeper Courses

In today's economy, more people have turned to creating their own businesses as a way to control their financial success. Many are discovering the rewards of being entrepreneurs. Many are also discovering one of the great challenges - they're great at whatever it is that they do, but not excellent at the administrative work that every business requires. They need to learn how to manage their accounts, their payroll taxes, and other business finances that could otherwise come back to haunt them. A bookkeeper course can be an invaluable aid.

Get Training as the Business Owner

If you are a new business owner, you may need basic training in business finance, even if you don't plan to directly handle your own accounting. You need to know:

- What records you must maintain to provide your bookkeeper and accountant,

- How to record business transactions properly as debits and credits,

- How to maintain your general ledger and journals, and

- How to read and understand financial statements.

Specialized courses are often available as local workshops (usually half-day or evening events) to orient new business owners to these financial basics.

Another Possibility: Hire a Bookkeeper

If your new business is profitable enough to allow you to hire a part-time bookkeeper, do so as quickly as possible. Bookkeeping is presumably not the strength that led you to open this company. Spending time on bookkeeping will draw you away from the work you do best and most profitably.

Another Answer: Become a Bookkeeper as an Entrepreneur!

More small businesses are being created now than at any time in the last couple of decades - 565,000 a month in 2010, according to the Kauffman Foundation. All of the new businesses that are being founded need bookkeepers. And most of them are too small to need someone full-time. Bookkeeping can be a great business to do from your home.

As a home-based entrepreneurial bookkeeper, you're a great candidate to serve any of those small companies. You can create your own brochure and business card and go door to door in small, low-rent office parks to find new clients. And of course, as you do excellent work your own clients will recommend you to others.

Do You Need Certification to Become a Bookkeeper?

A great many people work as bookkeepers without certification or licensure. However, many who are certified say they have gained advantages: pay raises (41 percent of Certified Bookkeepers) and new clients (34 percent of freelance Certified Bookkeepers)

Certifications and licensure available for bookkeeping are as follows:

- Certified Bookkeeper (CB), from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers and

- Certifications from the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers:

* Bookkeeper certification

* Payroll certification

* QuickBooks certification

* Microsoft Excel certification

* Tax certification

- Public Bookkeeper license, from the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers. Licensure requires passing an exam and maintaining 24 hours of continuing education annually.

What You Can Gain from a Bookkeeper Course

So will you take training in bookkeeping? There could be a great deal to gain. This kind of education could give you the edge you need to succeed in your new business ... or the skills you need to build a perennially in-demand business. Are you ready for that kind of success? Your time could be now!
