The Nicest Thing You Can Do For Your Garden Is To Buy Compost Bins

I was shown compost bins in action for the first time while making a visit to my Grandparents in Oregon last July. Granted, that is hardly cause for celebration, but it initiated a paradigm shift and some new experiences that shape how I view the world. The story begins with us enjoying a meal with my Grandparents that involved my Grandmother's latest quiche recipe. While we were relishing in the delicious offerings, I raised the issue of what they had been doing lately.

This prompted my Grandfather to happily inform us of even the tiniest details of the long hours he spent gardening and a long list of which plants he was growing and which ones he planned to introduce. It was clear to me that gardening had become a very significant part of his life.

You can likely guess that once our meal was over, our next task was a visit to the garden that had been the main subject of our dinner conversation. The first aspect I observed about the garden was its size. He had taken an area of maybe a half of an acre and had enclosed it with a high fence to keep deer out. What met my eyes when we walked through the fence were an incredible variety of plant life that included cabbage, spinach, carrots, potatoes, corn, asparagus, and radishes.

And then, as we ended our explorations of the garden we spotted compost bins. My Grandfather went through explaining the process of compost creation which involved him using leftover food and bits and leavings of various vegetables. Something like this makes it so much easier for a regular person to grow their own garden and to select what kind of veggies they want to grow and cultivate.

When my wife and I got back home, we had a lengthy chat about how a garden would benefit our family and our lifestyle. After our talk, she and I were both of the opinion that a garden would be a good thing to try out and that we should do it at our first opportunity. A week or so later, we made the drive down to the hardware store to get all of the things that we would need, including fence supplies and a rain barrel that I thought would come in handy. After a few months, we were happy to start seeing the vegetables that we had grown in our very own garden lying on our kitchen table!
