Amaze Your Audience With Colorful Postcards

Color goes with post cards very naturally. This fact is what spawned the tremendous growth of postcards by the tourism industry, not just in the United States but worldwide. When people used to go to an exotic locale or a beach, they would find post cards in the gift shops which showed beautiful beaches, ancient parks and churches and the treasure of national museums. These cards were sent from all over the world to places back home and those who had not been to these places would be tempted by the sights.

The tourism industry of every country soon learned to use post cards to tempt visitors to their lands. This was and continues to be perhaps the most successful use of post cards ever devised.

Why don't advertisers continue to see the value of this approach? The fact is that this approach can be tailored by almost any business:

A restaurant can send out post cards with color photographs of a table set with new dishes which have been added to the menu;

A clothing store can send out post cards with color photographs of new styles in the showroom.

A car dealership can send out post cards with color photographs of new models which have just arrived from the manufacturer.

An art gallery can send out post cards with color photographs of paintings from the collection of a new artist who is exhibiting.

All of these ideas follow the tourism industry model. They tell the person receiving the post card: you are missing out on something exciting. You should come and see this, too.

This model relies on one of the most basic traits of most humans: the desire to compete. The desire to "keep up with the Joneses". In other words, to have what other people have. When you show somebody something that is available and affordable - whether it's a beach or a new car or dress - they at least consider taking advantage of the opportunity.

The great thing about this approach is that it can be even more effective than it was seventy years ago when this practice began. The reason is that with digital photography and high quality four color printing, the quality of the image is so much better. And it is available for an extremely competitive price.

Another way to use color is color coding. Color coding is a great idea for advertisers who have an established customers base and who want to mail to them regularly. Perhaps you have a spring sale, a summer clearance, a fall new line kick-off and a Christmas sale. Using color on your post cards to signal those key events might be a great way to keep people cued to what's going on in your company: green for the spring sale, red for the summer clearance, earth tones for the fall kick-off and gold for the holidays.

Color is a strong design element in and of itself. The two examples shown above illustrate ways in which color can be intelligently employed in conjunction with post cards in order to promote your business.
