Generous Employee Benefits Can Improve Business Productivity

Businesses can improve performance by increasing their employees' annual leave entitlement.

Research by XpertHR revealed that British employers were generous with their annual holiday allowance as they provided six days more than the statutory minimum once the average had been calculated.

The average British employer gave their workforce 34 days off every year inclusive of bank holidays with the minimum statutory allowance coming to 28 days for full-time staff.

It was discovered that the majority of employers who made changes to holiday entitlement in the previous three years actually increased the amount of days leave they provided their workforce with.

Just over half of companies thought that increasing their employees' holiday allowance was a good way to keep up with benefit packages provided by competitors and it also demonstrated good business practice.

Improving employee benefits is a beneficial way to reward staff during tough economic times when a pay rise might be out of the question because of unsustainable salaries.

Employers can also use additional annual leave entitlement to supplement a pay rise that may be typically lower than usual as this should placate workers who were expecting a boost in their terms and conditions.

Summer can be a difficult period for employers granting holiday leave as the majority of workers are looking to take time off to take advantage of the warm weather or the fact that their children are out of education for a few weeks.

Businesses must be aware that being overly sympathetic to parents over other employees when granting holiday requests in the summer may leave them open to discrimination claims.

In order to avoid any confusion when granting holiday requests, it is advisable that employers publish policy guidelines stating that each worker will be treated equally and that each decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Workers must understand that family commitments will not necessarily give them an automatic advantage over other employees and that it is the responsibility of bosses to act reasonably on every application.

Holiday requests can be refused if there is an authentic reason like specific work projects need to be completed or the business location needs to be supervised on a certain day.

It is crucial not to refuse holiday as part of a disciplinary process as these matters should be treated as isolated cases otherwise an employee may feel they are being treated unfairly.
