9 Quotes from Successful Business Entrepreneurs

In a recent edition of Entrepreneur Grant Davis gathered 9 quotes from successful business entrepreneurs about what it takes to start a successful business. Hard work, dedication, and creativity topped the list. If you have an idea for a startup business, the passion and dedication to put the sweat equity into your business, you will be successful. Here are the quotes Davis gathered:

"Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise." Gert Boyle, Chairman of Columbia Sportswear.

"In a totally male dominated industry, you learn quickly as a woman that you speak your mind, work hard to earn the respect of the men you work with and sometimes (rarely) admit you can't lift something really heavy on your own." Adriana Blake, third generation owner of Taos Ski Valley.

"Use legal counsel from day one. I know from sad experience that one three hour meeting can save you $1 million down the road." Gary Erickson, founder of Clif Bar.

"If you have a higher reason [for going into business] than just to make money…it will bring you longer fulfillment. And it won't feel like work." Sammy Hagar, who sold his Cabo Wab Tequila for more than $100 million.

"Learning agility…I will take that over deep technical knowledge in almost any position we are filling." Travis Campbell, President and CEO of Far Bank Enterprises.

"You can't have all the good ideas yourself. It's truly satisfying to give employee's responsibility, exercise some faith, and let them flourish." Lara Merriken, founder of Larabar, which was sold to General Mills in 2008.

"Don't hire anyone who isn't better than average. Once you compromise on the quality of your people, compromising becomes the norm, and pretty soon, you have an average company full of average people." Jim Koch, founder of Samuel Adams Beer.

"It's a mistake to assume that people have to look and act like you do to fit successfully into your company's culture. The most interesting cultures have a diverse mix of people with different perspectives who share common values." Kim Jordan, co-founder of New Belgium Brewing.

"It's better not to [raise money]. We never raised a dime. As a result we evolved to have the right culture, one where everyone understood the value of a dollar." Jim Holland, co-founder of Backcountry.com, sold to Liberty Media in 2007.

When you are just starting out with you own business, it is wise to take counsel from those who have been down that road. Never be afraid of seeking out advice or reading up on how a successful business person got to where he or she is today. Use these quotes to get ideas, gain inspiration, and make up a few quotes of your own.
