The damage that can be done to your home from even a few inches of standing water during a flood can be significant. A flood event can cause significant damage to your furnishings. Drywall, flooring, cabinetry and other features in your home may also be extensively damaged. Furthermore, there is an increased risk of mold growth in your home after a flood event, and water extraction and remediation services generally must be paid for to minimize the risk of mold growth. While there is nothing that you can do to stop the rain from falling, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk of flooding in your home. Consider how some of these flood defences for your home can prevent or minimize the risk of flood damage in your home during a heavy rainstorm.
Landscaping Design
The landscaping design in your yard can greatly affect the risk for flooding in your home. Landscape design elements can be used to carry water toward your home or away from home. Consider how the water has flowed on your property during the last few rainstorms. Is water gathering in puddles or flowing toward your home? A landscaping company can be contracted to grade the slope of your yard downward and away from your home. This will minimize the chance of water entering your home and from large puddles from growing in size during a downpour. Further, extra features like small drainage canals can also be installed to carry water toward the street, gutters or other public water systems. If you live next to a creek or river that is prone to flooding during heavy downpours, consider installing a flood barrier at the end of your property to prevent rising waters from entering your home.
Home Design Elements
In addition to landscaping elements in your yard, there are other home design elements that can be used strategically to minimize the risk of flooding. Gutters can be placed on your home, and water can be collected in large rain barrels placed at the bottom of the gutter downspouts. This prevents excess water from running off into your yard. Another option to consider involves installing permeable pavement on the driveway and sidewalks on your property. Some paved surfaces create runoff, and this can easily create a flooding issue during heavy downpours. Permeable surfaces can more easily absorb the water and minimize runoff.
With the right flood defences in place on your property, you can minimize the ability for rising waters to penetrate your property. Furthermore, you can also more easily control the flow of water on your property during downpours. Consider how you can utilize some or all of these ideas to prevent flooding in your home.
