Where To Find Sample Resumes

A resume may be the first contact that an applicant has with a prospective employer. It is important, then, that every job seeker has a resume that will catch a reader's attention. The best way for most people to understand the options for developing their own resumes is by looking at examples, so it is critical that they have good sample resumes to use. There are several places that job hunters should look to find good samples.

Libraries. Most libraries have sections dedicated to the job hunt. In addition to traditional library offerings such as books, magazines, and information handouts, many now subscribe to sophisticated online career services and software that will help a user both develop and format a resume. Most reference librarians are very knowledgeable about what the library offers and can help a job hunter pick the most appropriate materials.

Government sponsored job centers. Local job centers are in the business of helping people find jobs. Depending on the center, it may have information sheets, software, online resources, and counselors available for job hunters. Since these centers may also have inside information on jobs that are available in the areas they serve, a job hunter should make the local career center one of the first stops in seeking a job. Locations and hours of government job centers can usually be found in local phone books and online.

Career centers at educational institutions. Community colleges and technical schools have career centers that help their students find jobs and will have examples of resumes for patrons to use. Usually, these centers are also open to the public, though some of the more advanced aids and one-on-one help from their counselors may be reserved for their own current and former students. Four-year-colleges and universities also have career and job search centers. Their services are usually restricted to the school's own students and alumni. All job hunters who have technical or college degrees should definitely check with their alma maters for help.

The Internet. A quick search of the internet yields over eight million results dealing with sample resumes. While there is obviously more information than any job hunter could need, not all the information is useful or legitimate. Sorting through the overwhelming data is daunting. The best way to judge which advice is trust-worthy is to look for results that come from a respected educational institution or a government agency. Charlatans know that job hunters are often desperate and are clever in using the Internet to scam otherwise skeptical surfers.

Professional career counselors or resume writers. A professionally developed resume can be a valuable part of a job hunter's tool kit, but it can also be a very expensive tool. Many job-search consultants will have some free, but valuable information on their websites, possibly including examples of resumes. It is worth the time to check out these sites, but readers need to keep in mind that the eventual goal of a site is to convince visitors that they need to pay the site owner to produce their resumes. In most cases, having a resume created by a professional will be a good investment, and for executives and high-level managers, the price may easily be worth it. So if you need help with your resume, this may be a service you want to consider.
