You probably envisage a trade show is for medium to large businesses; after all attending a trade show can be expensive. However, if you are entrepreneur or a start up business, attending the correct type of trade show could be just the boost you need.
If you undertake some research, you will find there are numerous trade shows taking place all over the country every year specifically with entrepreneurs and small start-up businesses in mind. These types of trade shows are perfect; the venues are a lot smaller, there are no giant display booths that take over the floor space. There's a more intimate feel to the show and you get a better chance to meet likeminded people and network with them.
Importantly, the cost of attending and exhibiting is far less expensive. You display area is manageable and doesn't need a host of helpers to work it. The equipment is lightweight and can be carried easily and when you arrive you can set up your display area in an hour or so.
It is best to always take along one other person; after all there will be times when you need to leave your display and this could just be the moment when someone passes by and wants to do business with you. However, as an entrepreneur, it may not be possible to take along a member of staff; otherwise you may have to close the business for the day. Consider taking a family member or friend along. All you need to do in advance is give them basic information about your products and services and let them know what you want to try and achieve.
This means that your booth will also have someone in attendance. During busy times you can manage the booth while your helper does a little scouting around. Get them to wander around the trade show and check out the other booths. Get them to find out what your competitors are up to. Try to find other booths that may complement what you do so you can set up referrals systems with them.
During quiet times, let your helper take charge of the booth while you follow up on the information they obtained earlier. Take your cell phone with you and then if someone turns up at the display area your helper can quickly contact you and you can get back while your visitor is being entertained.
While you are wandering, exchange as many business cards as possible. It's also wise to take a small bag with you that contain your leaflets or other literature. It also means you can collect literature from other display area which you can digest later.
As an entrepreneur or a start-up business, you are likely to see more people in one day at a small trade show than you could possibly see in months, using other methods of marketing. You will find that the leads and referrals you get will often translate into real business orders, because the people attending know what they are looking for.
