The Return of Traditional Cardigans for Women

Vintage and retro clothing has taken the fashion world by storm. Whilst fashion has always been cyclical, with forgotten fashions coming back onto the catwalk 20 years later, there's a demand for retro styling that has resulted in the return of once-dismissed cardigans for women.

There was a time when the twinset was de rigueur for a certain class - and age - of woman, but with cute designs, pastel colours and great fashions to match with, these types of tops and cardigans for women have seen a resurgence in popularity. Lightweight, easy to wear and with plenty of style, these cardigans are perfect for work or play and work brilliantly with retro-style skirts and long boots as well as with skinny black jeans and flat pumps - in fact, there are lots of ways to make the most of this style.

Every girl loves to be cosy when the temperature drops and whilst many other cover-ups are popular, such as hoodies and fleece jackets, chunky, warm cardigans for women have made a real comeback. Disregarded for a long time, knits like cable sweaters are now appearing in stores up and down the high street, as well as online, and cable-knit cardigans are being worn again across the age groups. Available in bright colours and with plenty of detail, cable and Arran-style knits are the perfect way to add a warm layer for the outdoors, or for snuggling down on the sofa.

And let's not forget the overwhelming revival of the Fair Isle pattern - in hundreds of guises up and down the country. This intricate knitwear used to be the butt of fashion jokes, but its complete take-over of knitwear in recent seasons shows the power of the catwalk - and the recognition of the style and beauty of the traditional Fair Isle pattern. Today, there are plenty of cardigans for women that use either the standard pattern or a variation on it, giving you something truly eye-catching to wear.

Of course, there are plenty of more recent styles to choose from too, including the incredibly popular waterfall cardigans, edge-to-edge cardigans for a smarter style and a wide range of long-length and more formal knitwear. But traditional style cardigans for women have definitely made a return to the front of fashion, so if it's time to update your wardrobe, take a good look at these vintage and retro-inspired designs - and use them to your advantage.
