Made In America - A Renewed Emphasis On US Goods

In today's economy, more and more products are being manufactured overseas. This is especially true for park furnishings and commercial recreation equipment. But, one company's products are 100-percent American-made. Even the recycled materials used in the manufacturing of their products come exclusively from America, keeping the refuse out of our landfills.

Located in Mulliken Michigan, a rural farming community, Polly Products creates and manufactures all of their recycled plastic components and products in their plant. No jobs have been shipped overseas.

"We are proud to supply American-made, environmentally-responsible products to the marketplace," says Al Cockrum, vice president of sales and product development at Polly Products. "Our products help keep Americans employed and provide a durable alternative to other materials that rob our environment of our valuable natural resources."

Polly Products provides park and recreation furnishings to schools, hospitals, airports, parks and other commercial markets worldwide. The company offers the widest range of 100-percent recycled plastic park benches in the marketplace today.

While 'Buy American!' might sound like a slogan touted by American manufacturers to sell more products, there are actually many valid reasons to buy US-manufactured goods. Statistics found by ABC's Made in America TV series in 2011 stated that if American's spent just 1 percent more on American-made products, it would create 200,000 jobs in the USA.

When American consumers and businesses purchase products developed and manufactured by American companies, they help keep people working and advance economic growth. Encouraging Americans to buy products made in the USA, however, is not a new concept.

The Buy American Act was passed in 1933 by Congress and signed by President Hoover on his last full day in office. It was enacted to protect domestic labor by providing a preference for American-made goods in government purchases. The Act has only been substantially amended four times in the succeeding years.

Buying American-made products means different things to different people, but an increasing number of people and businesses are beginning to understand the importance of American manufacturing. As a result, there is renewed emphasis on products made in the USA in an effort to keep manufacturing jobs in America.

In 1960, foreign goods made up just 8 percent of Americans' purchases. Today, nearly 60 percent of everything purchased in the US is made overseas. When jobs are shipped abroad they almost never return.

In the last five years, since December 2007, more than 2 million manufacturing jobs have been eliminated. A large percentage of this steep drop in production is the result of countless US companies moving production to other countries.

But many American companies, such as Polly Products, still develop and manufacture products in the USA. These companies are proving everyday that American craftsmen and manufacturers continue to produce price-competitive and quality goods.

"We are proud to say that 100-percent of our products are still manufactured in the USA and we're still able to compete globally," Cockrum says. "When American businesses and consumers buy goods made in the USA, they help keep the American economy and workforce growing."
