Living In The Land of Designers

Working within the fashion world is in many ways all it's cracked up to be; there's a buzz of excitement that's constantly building and a constant dynamism that steams from interpreting the creations of designers and fulfilling the needs of people.

I was fortunate enough to live for many years in Italy, the origin of trailblazers in design from the Renaissance right up to today. For a person with an interest that goes beyond the aesthetic and into what drives designers, it's been an illuminating and enriching experience, and one that still informs much that I do today. Working among designers - from household names to those whose toil is 'just for fun' - has given me a window onto the way that designers evolve.

I've observed how very young children develop an incredible facility to draw - when the temptation of a paper and pen or pencil is enough to trigger a transport of colour and shape.

For older children, that shape takes a more definite form: a car, a ship, a flower, a handbag…

Call it part of the DNA of the Italian people.

When you start to question why Italy is such an enduring source of the designers, brands and products that shape the future trends that permeate the wider world and influence the tastes of its denizens, you have to look deeper than those household names I mentioned. The real engine room of design houses the small and medium enterprises; family run businesses most likely born in the garage, which are developed by parents, nurtured by their sons and daughters and propagated by further generations.

With 'prestige' designers publicising those whose face or formula fits, often those small companies are the anonymous designers and manufacturers behind the big names. They are the powerhouses who toil behind the scenes, reaping reward for their labour as their vision stimulates the desire of the many.

Thus, we expect to present an array of Italian leather bags born in the creativity of families like mine or maybe like yours. And we envisage a similar policy of showcasing core designers from the UK and Europe.

By choosing portfolios of Italian handbags - mostly designs that meet the taste and needs of real people with real lives to lead - we support that model of sustainable family business. After all, it's the social core of the economy of any country on its way to sustained progress and development, today more than ever.
