How To Decorate Professionally

With the economy being what it is at the moment and almost everybody is looking after their pennies, more and more people are taking the DIY option rather than getting the professionals in. But how do you do a professional job without the cost?

If you are looking to start painting a room, there are a few simple tips to professional decorating that will ensure that the costs are kept low and the work looks good.

Ensure you have enough time to do the work - you can tell when a job is rushed so set aside enough time to do the preparation and painting.

Clear the area - you should always start by moving as much furniture and belongings out of the room before you start, having a cluttered environment to work in is a recipe for disaster.

Protect the area - if you're painting in a room that has a carpet that is not being replaced, ensure you use the correct carpet protection. Do not think for one minute that professionals don't use plastic sheeting to cover carpets, we're all human and costly mistakes do happen! I always use a self adhesive carpet protector; it's great for carpets and amazing for stairs.

Prepare your area - spend time to clean all the walls and paintwork first and remove any loose bits (like flaky plaster), fill any holes with filler and then sand down the filled holes when dry. After this is done sand down or strip any paintwork (this will depend on the state of the woodwork before you start, if you can see that it already has had many coats over the years then I'd strip the paint off completely).

Use the right tools - when it comes to painting a wall having a good roller is one thing but spending a little more on a good paint brush is well worth it.

Work in the correct order - start with the paint work and do a couple of coats, when dry, use masking tape to cover the paintwork edge to ensure a straight line is painted when you come to paint the walls.

Remove drips - when painting the walls or paintwork you invariably see drips coming down from where too much paint has been put on the surface, ensure you brush or roller these out for a smooth even finish.

Take your time - I know I have already said this, but if you rush mistakes will happen.

By following these simple steps you can get a professional finish to your work and by using a good form of carpet protection you can reduce the risks of any major costly mistakes.
