Attend a typical sales meeting of a company promoting their latest and greatest product, and the loud celebratory music and chanted affirmations may lead you to actually believe that what's really happening in your life. That intense feeling of insecurity? They'll convince you it's not really happening at all, and that by selling their product, their service, their hype you will rise to the top of their success.
But that's what you distanced yourself from when you became a business owner, right? Yet maybe you're feeling like a team of one, now, fighting the odds. Working 24/7, tired, stressed, and worse yet - that nobody's feeling your pain. All that talent you're putting into your dream - for what? Hey, just because the world hasn't recognized your genius doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
It might mean, however, that you have not clearly identified your genius for yourself. Understanding how you process will help you determine your genius. Are you a conceptual visionary - one who has a clear vision and takes immediate action? Or are you experimental visionary - one who has taken a little more time to "evolve"?
Some folks have a clear, singular focus, as if they have horse-blinders on to any opposition, resistance, or challenges about their pending success or failure. Their drive is relentless. These would of course be the Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg's of the world. You don't have to agree with them or their principles to agree that they have made it to the tops of their fields.
Everyone loves a winner, right? Not everyone, of course, reaches "fame" status, but there are a lot of lesser-known success stories out there who are not only "making it" but whose visions have made an imprint on the world as we know it.
It comes down to not necessarily how the world sees us, but how we see ourselves. So, think about that. Do you recognize your genius? Can you, for instance, truly separate yourself from the person or situation you're struggling with and both identify and attack the problem and not the person or yourself?
While age is not necessarily a factor, self-doubt is the enemy of late-bloomers. It's hard to maintain confidence if you aren't an instant success in our get-it-fast world. Whether you're a young entrepreneur, chomping at the bit to launch the latest and greatest idea, or a 35-plusser who's taking a slower path, there's nothing that says you can't succeed.
Here are 3 solid tips on how to find the genius within yourself, and turn that into something marketable, profitable, and rewarding, no matter what your age, current standing, or status:
1) Recognize your true abilities. You may take many for granted, thinking "Oh, anyone can do that," but guess what? They can't! Write a list of all the things you're truly good at. Put a check by all those that could potentially make you money.
2) Watch the way you communicate - not with everyone out there, but with yourself! Listen to that inner voice? Is it reprimanding? Overly critical? Mimicking the voice of someone else who chooses to put you down? Turn down the volume. Beating yourself up emotionally is not the answer. Reminding yourself of what you do well IS the answer.
3) Define what you truly want. Maybe that "recognition" you'd hoped for in your youth will shift to "security" or doing something meaningful in your life. But, until you define it, you won't be able to put the steps in place to reach it.
Change is seldom easy, whether it's something you choose yourself, or something done for you by a decision made by someone else, but there are changes you have control over and ones you don't. First things first. Identify those. Separate out what you truly have control over and let go of what you don't.
I'm never tired of hearing or reminding myself of Einstein's warning: Insanity is doing the same ineffective thing over and over and expecting different results. Fooling oneself is pointless and a total waste of time.
You are the business owner now. You are the driving force behind your success. But maybe you've reached a "T" in the road. The left path takes you where you've gone again and again, circling around and around with no growth, no forward motion. The right path is riskier in some ways, simply in having to make the decision to change, but once you do - once you take that path of greater resistance, the rewards will be greater as well.
So, are you turning left on the path of "going it alone" and circling mindlessly around and around? Or are you turning right onto the path of working with a business coach who can help you put effective systems and processes in place. Sometimes being a genius is recognizing, just as athletic teams have recognized, that having a coach mentor you can be the difference between success and perceived failure. You decide.
