Infrared gas analyzer, a detecting tool not unlike the fictional tricorder, is commonly used by factories and plants to measure gas emissions released by the facility. These tools are quite helpful for maintaining our environment and protecting workers in the local area. It is fairly well-known that the gasses from factories are unpleasant, but more than that they can ruin your health. These gas analyzers typically contain two chambers, one of which contains a small sample of the gas that the analyzer is measuring and the other is the intake chamber. The chambers then, heat up the gasses using infrared light and measure their ability to absorb energy. If the absorption levels are roughly equivalent to the reference gas, then the analyzer reports that the gas is present in the atmosphere. It is also possible to give a fairly precise measure of how much of the gas is in the test chamber in parts per million.
It is now much easier for corporations to monitor gas emissions, due to the now portable infrared gas analyzer. In fact, portability has opened up infrared analyzers for use in other fields such as, volcanology and geological applications. Portable devices make use of a single infrared beam that measures the intake of a small, dry sample of gas. Of course, not all of these devices can be customized to detect various substances, but many of them do. Of course, the portable infrared analyzers can recognize a wide variety of gasses just like the old method, from carbon dioxide to hydrogen and oxygen.
Emissions monitoring requires gas analyzers for success. Due to the bulk of the old devices and the lack of an easy means to reconfigure them, they were originally intended as a permanent installation in factories. The newer models can be conveniently used almost anywhere you'd want to monitor gas emissions. Of course, they are in no way restricted to a specific set of gasses, they can be made to detect anything, including oxygen levels.
