Why Do People Get Canvas Photo Prints?

As the moniker suggests, canvas photo prints are photographs printed on canvas. "What reason is there for making canvas photo prints?" you might ask. In fact, there's more than one explanation. Paper is used more often, it's true, but canvas photo prints offer some unique advantages. The "fabric look" makes for a gorgeous, complex effect. The slight texture has the effect of making a simple photograph look like a painting. There's nothing else that makes a photo print look quite so special, whether you're putting it on your wall or giving it to a friend.

Canvas photo prints are also your best bet for large pictures. Paper doesn't last quite as long as canvas, and it's thinner and more fragile. It's also less absorbent, and therefore more likely to diminish. To keep it from fading, you need to use a protective covering - either glass or a chemical finish. Additionally, you can't display a large paper print by itself; it has to be mounted. Canvas, on the other hand, absorbs ink, making your picture more durable, and it can be displayed very simply.

You can choose between cotton canvas, polyester canvas, and a blend. Cotton canvas is made from natural fibers, while polyester canvas consists of plastic fibers. Pure polyester tends to be cheaper, but the lack of natural materials makes for less absorbency. Meanwhile, cotton is costs a bit more, but its fibers are more receptive to ink. Your best bet is to seek out a company that offers a cotton-poly blend, which gives you all the perks of a pure cotton canvas at a lower price. Be sure to select a canvas with a neutral pH, as this will prevent your colors from fading.

As a rule, printers are happy to stretch and frame or mount your canvas photo prints for you. The printer can also give you your photo unstretched and rolled up. However, this isn't the best idea unless you know how to stretch canvas. Your average printing company is going to know much more than you do about stretching, mounting, and framing. It's generally better to let the professionals handle it.

Whether the products of your professional photo printing are destined for your wall, your best friend's home, or an art gallery downtown, consider getting them done on canvas. No matter the occasion, your finished print will be a thing of beauty that lasts longer than a lifetime.
