Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd is one of India's largest sugar producers, and one of the major sugar producers world wide. While most of the sugar in India is made from sugar cane, this company was keen to expand its production to make sugar from beets. To do this, it needed different equipment which, if bought new, would be much too expensive to justify the return on investment (ROI). The company approached one of the world's largest suppliers of used process equipment, Perry Videx, based in the United States.
Perry Videx has a large inventory of used equipment within the United States and Europe. When Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd got in touch and explained what kind of equipment it needed, Perry Videx immediately began its search. It reached out to Ukrainian company, Sakhavtomat.
Director of Sakhavtomat, Alexander Yarovoy, explains. "At the end of 2008 we received a proposal from Lev Drago from Perry Videx to consider the possibility of searching for sugar beet processing equipment to be shipped to India. Of course, this proposal might seem a fantastic one if it had not been for the high worldwide reputation of Perry Videx in general and that of Lev Drago in the sugar industry in particular."
Sakhavtomat knew of a sugar beet processing plant in Ivanopol, Ukraine, that had previously been shut down, its equipment in good condition but now idle.
Perry Videx sourced most of the used equipment via Sakhavtomat, with some additional equipment from Perry Videx's inventory in England. Perry Videx served as the supplier to Renuka, the equipment acquired in Ivanopol was match marked and refurbished in the Ukraine by Sakhavtomat, and then shipped to India.
The total weight of the equipment was more than 500 tonnes and it required significant timber packing. The equipment included the following:
- Beet diffuser
- Beet washer with rinsers and water
- Catchers for stones, straw and beet tops
- Beet slicers with 12 frames
- Stord dewatering presses
The outcome of this cooperative project has been a huge success. Shree Renuka Sugars began processing its first beets into sugar in 2010 and will further process this sugar into ethanol, a renewable fuel. Purchasing used process equipment for a major portion of the plant reduced the costs by 70 percent when compared with the price of purcasing new equipment. With involvement from India, the United States, England, and Ukraine, the project was a truly global effort.
