Is The Cost Of Erecting Flood Defences Worthwhile?

It can be a difficult for today's homeowner to reconcile the fact that everything they've worked so hard to obtain can be washed away at the whim of an unseasonably strong rain. Once they square this possibility with themselves, their thoughts turn to ways in which to protect themselves from mother nature, and trying to mitigate the effects of natural disasters, especially floods. While it's true that investing in personal flood defences for a private home can be a potentially expensive venture, its cost is arguably much smaller than the risk of leaving a home completely unprotected.

The last decade's worth of storms that have broken all sorts of records in terms of both their strength and unpredictability should have served as an effective wake-up call to anybody that thinks that traditional flood prevention measures are enough to protect entire communities in all situations. Freak storms like Hurricane Katrina in 2005 can still cause tremendous damage to communities in cities that spend millions of dollars on flood defences.

This is just one reason why city officials in many low-lying metropolitan areas have been advising people for years to take responsibility for their own well-being, and invest in a way to deter flood waters around their own property. For people that feel they may lack the technological knowledge to do this effectively on their own, there are plenty of companies that specialize in surveying the topology of an area, determining its level of vulnerability to flood currents, and then assisting in the construction of protection measures that can scale to a wide variety of household budgets.

In terms of actual cost, installing effective flood barriers usually doesn't come very cheap. Physical obstructions that are capable of deflecting thousands of gallons of flowing water have to be quite heavy by necessity, and putting them into place is a fairly labor-intensive process. Still, considering the fact that many kinds of mainstream homeowner's insurance policies don't have comprehensive coverage clauses for flood damage, the financial risk of installing a home upgrade that might not ever be needed is overshadowed by the very real risk of losing everything in the event of a rogue storm.

As if that wasn't reason enough to start saving up, it's also worth noting that flood barriers can potentially add value to a home. In a housing market that seems as though it may be in a deflated state for the foreseeable future, flood protection barriers can definitely be an advantage for a seller if it ever came time to sell off the house. In short, the cost of installing such an upgrade is not only worthwhile, but could possibly pay for itself several times over, given the right set of circumstances.
