Last week, I was asked to provide some information concerning my use of Pinterest and I thought I would share some of my answers.
** When did you begin using Pinterest?
Just a couple of months really and I now have one board with infographics about local seo, another on social media and small business infographics, and a third covering why small companies should use social media. I also have one for pictures of Lollipop ladies. I have over 50 pins and about the same number of followers.
** What made you start?
I had been reminded about using its domain authority and how it could help you get a front page ranking for some keywords.
But I also think it's good for people to find you and get to know you and your business. Trust is huge when it comes to promoting brand awareness. You need to be everywhere that potential customers might be hanging out so they start to recognise your brand.
Pinterest is particularly good for putting you in front of a targeted audience. So if you're selling products related to martial arts, you might want to put up a board with images of famous UFC fighters wearing the latest trendy gear. Users may well go to your bio to find out more about you and see a link back to your site. They check out all the different MMA clothing on your pages. They already like what you're putting up and, if the price is right, you may have built up enough trust for them to make a purchase.
It's like an international gallery divided into sections for very specific interests. But when the marketers move in, the real people tend to leave town so I do hope they have sufficient controls in place to prevent it from suffering with affiliate abuse.
** Can you explain what your business does if you are using Pinterest at least in part for promotion?
I get businesses found online through SEO and Social Media in a small town in deepest Essex but we have clients from all over England. I also work as a lollipop lady on the crossing outside my local school. I direct traffic in more ways than one.
** Other Pinterest users I've spoken with call it addicting. Is that true? Yes. If I did not have so many other platforms for myself and clients, I could definitely see myself becoming addicted.
It's the whole 'collector' mentality. But it's more than that because we are such social creatures, we want to show things we like to our friends... and their friends... Having a stranger repin something is the equivalent of a recognition that you know what you're talking about.
I shall be watching Pinterest with interest to see how it compares to the other social media platforms.
