It is impossible to completely guarantee that a flood will not strike your community. However, there are steps that can be taken to lessen the likelihood that a flood can cause damage in your area. Here are a few tips that can be used in flood prevention efforts.
Put Up Flood Barriers
Walls can be erected that will stop the water from getting into the community. This is useful if your town is located near a body of water or below sea level. For example, a community that lives near a major river can put up barriers to keep the excess water from flowing into the town. Putting up a dam or a pumping system may also work well.
Divert The Water
If your community cannot block the water, perhaps the community can divert the water. Giving rainwater a clear path that takes it away from towns and villages can be just as beneficial as any barrier would be. In fact, diverting the water towards farms in the community could help the crops grow faster and larger.
Keep Existing Vegetation In Place
A solid root system can help trees and other plants absorb water. Plants that absorb water will reduce the chance of the ground becoming too wet. This creates a situation where run-off will collect on the surface and race toward populated areas. If there is a natural lake or swamp, keeping it in place can stop storms from unleashing their full fury on land. Weaker storms will result in less rainfall. Less rainfall will result in less flooding.
Build On High Ground
Water is going to flow downhill. This means that people who live in higher elevations will not have to deal with flooding. You don't even need to be that high up. All you have to do is be higher than the lowest point in the surrounding area. For example, a person living on the top of a hill could be completely dry while your neighbor who lives in the valley could deal with flooding on a regular basis.
There is nothing you can do to stop a storm from rolling through. Nature will do whatever it has to do to keep the weather cycle in balance. However, there are things that you can do to keep the flood from harming you. Build a wall, divert the water or build on high ground. Doing so will make sure that you and your family are safe from flood waters.
