You may be considering attracting new customers from overseas to expand your companies business. However, you may feel there are a few major problems you need to overcome, such as marketing your products overseas can be very expensive, if you intend to travel to the country and you may have a language problem.
There is a fairly simple way of getting around these issues; find yourself a trade show in the U.S. that is set up to welcome overseas visitors. There are hundreds of trade shows every year that are set up to welcome visitors from overseas, so although the trade show you are exhibiting at may only be a couple of hours from your place of work, it has the potential to reach around the world. What could be better, you stay in the U.S. and potential new overseas customers come to see you.
The U.S. is the host to some of the most prestigious trade shows around; some trade shows are so successful at catering for overseas visitors that over 25 per cent of attendees come from overseas. Putting the attendance numbers into perspective, it means that if you were to exhibit at this type of trade show, potentially 1 in 4 people who visit your booth will be from overseas. It's unlikely you could possibly achieve this exposure anywhere else without excessive costs being involved.
There are, of course, several things you need to do before exhibiting at a trade show to attract overseas business. It's essential you make certain you know the market and the country or countries you want to do business in. Find out who your competitors are and try to find out what your company can offer that's different or innovative.
You must research trade shows well in advance to sort out those that will definitely be attracting overseas visitors. Any organizer of a trade show that attracts or wants to attract overseas visitors will be proud to indicate the numbers. Make absolutely certain that the trade show covers the type of business your company is involved in.
Make certain you have basic knowledge of the language of the country you intend to operate in. You don't need to learn too much because all the overseas visitors will be able to converse in English. However, it will help immensely and impress your visitors; just enough to be able to welcome them and to hold a simple introductory conversation.
Traditions are very important; it's essential that you research these for the country you are interested in doing business in. Take Asian for example; many Asian countries have a certain way of greeting each other and in particular the way you exchange business card is important. It's a presentation, rather than simply handing over the cards, and you are expected to study it for a few seconds.
As with most things research and preparation is important. Undertake these things and have a good chance of having a successful trade show which will result in you having secured many new overseas contacts, and it's all taken place without you having to leave the shores of the U.S.
