If your video isn't any good, no one is going to watch it. You might get someone's attention for three seconds - or even a minute - but when the message is boring, the photography is poor, lighting is poor or the camera jumps so much that the viewer gets seasick, you're definitely not going to have success in sales. Video production planning doesn't ensure you make a great video, but it certainly increases the chances that it won't be something someone breaks his or her arm over reaching for the mouse to click away from it.
Before You Start Filming
Come up with an original idea. Don't use someone else's ideas, as those ideas may not work for your product or service. Furthermore, a viewer may recognize it and could associate that other idea with something they had a bad experience with. Goodbye sale.
Once you get a good idea of what you want to do in your video, plan every little detail of the video. If it's a short video, use a whiteboard to plan it out. Or, you can create a short list. One key is to ensure that everyone involved is on the same page. On the subject of short videos, long videos tend to lose sales. People simply don't have a long attention span when watching advertising videos so get to the point as quickly as possible. Do just that, so the viewer is sure to watch your entire video.
Don't just video someone standing or sitting still, action and emotion tends to keep viewers' attention spans. If you want your video to go viral, it must give the audience a reason to share it.
If you plan on using stock footage for your video, pick high definition stock footage. Make sure that the footage fits with your idea and looks clear and crisp. People won't stick around to watch the fuzzies. Goodbye sale. At the same time, be sure you choose a person who can sound natural while reading copy. Someone with a monotone voice is either going to bore the viewer or put them to sleep.
During Filming
Use equipment to ensure that you have the best possible film. Make sure you get the lighting right and make sure you eliminate lighting shadows. Make sure the mics pick up everything they are supposed to pick up. Make sure your camera is solid and steady on a tripod and make sure the focus on the subject is perfect. It won't do to have great high definition stock footage paired with a fuzzy dude mumbling words like a robot on drugs.
Putting it All Together
You are creating a video for a specific audience. Whether you are create a sales video or an informational video, or just a fun video to help show off your product or service make sure it reaches the audience for that product or service. Keep the information interesting. Even add some humor if the subject lends itself to humor. Use stock footage that compliments the subject of the video to cover up cuts. If you add text to the video, make sure the text is clear and crisp so that people will actually read the text and not just gloss over it.
Having fun when creating your video makes the process easier and you can be sure your video production will be successful when you do it with class and keeping the audience interested will make sure they want to watch it again and again and are going to want to hit the share button instead of clicking to another page.
