Commercial Flood Protection Doesn't Only Mean Having Insurance

There are two major aspects to commercial flood protection that need to be considered before a business into an area that is prone to flooding or choosing to stay in such an area. Floods can cause devastating amounts of damage, but there are ways to prevent the damage and deal with it once it's been done.

Prevention is sometimes overlooked due to the cost of certain flood walls and other flood barriers. However, not all flooding happens when large bodies of water rise. Some floods happen due to water mains and other water pipes bursting. If the commercial space is in a stand-alone building, pipes should be inspected every six months to a year to ensure they are in proper working order and any leaks or damaged pipes should be replaced at that time.

All basement drains should be checked, as well, to make sure they are clear of obstructions and that they are draining properly. A good test for this is to have a large amount of water poured down the drain as quickly as possible to see if there are any backups. Granted, if a river overflows into the basement, the drain is going to have a hard time keeping up, but for burst pipes, most clear drains can keep up to the water flow.

In addition to having pipes and drains inspected, a person can have a water level alarm installed and monitored by an alarm monitoring service. When water rises over a certain level, a signal is sent to the monitoring station and they begin to alert owners and other contacts. The faster flooding is dealt with, the more items can be saved from water damage.

Finally, it is a good idea to buy commercial flood protection insurance to help with replacing lost items and repairing the building after a flood. Sometimes, this insurance is difficult to obtain, especially if the building is in an area that is prone to flooding. However, installation of standard flood barriers, automatic flood barriers and a monitored water sensor may be enough to make a difference. If an insurance provider sees that every effort is being made to avoid costly damages, they are more likely to approve a policy.

Policies are much easier to obtain when in an area that is not prone to flooding and discounts may be available for passing routine inspections and having a monitored water sensor installed at the premises. While some floods cannot be prevented, having protections in place to prevent damage or pay for any lost equipment, building repairs and other water-related damage can save a lot of time and money when dealing with a flood.
