If you are at the stage in your home business that you need to hire somebody to help you out, then you are doing pretty good. You are busy enough to need somebody, and are making enough money to be able to hire somebody. That means you've experienced some kind of positive growth since you've started your business. That is absolutely wonderful. But as you likely suspect, hiring somebody is anything but easy. There are many risks involved, both financial and legal. Now more than ever, you've really got to be careful, otherwise hiring the wrong person can quickly cause you to sink into red ink. And that can be a difficult place to escape from.
The best way to find a qualified candidate would be to go through some kind of intermediary. Ideally, this would be somebody you trust and hold in esteem. It's hard to figure out if somebody is going to be a good worker through a simple interview. Yet this is how plenty of people hire their first ever employee. If you don't know anybody that knows somebody, then the next step would be to go through an agency. These, however, can be expensive.
If you can't find anybody through the method listed above, then consider putting an ad in the paper or online. Be as descriptive as possible when describing the position. The more applicants you get, the better, because you'll be able to choose the best.
You'll need to come up with some kind of screening process when you first interview the candidates. This should be done over the phone. Create a list of questions that you can ask them that will tell you their overall dedication, work ethic, and views on the workplace. The last person you want to hire is somebody who is going to show up and expect you to pay them regardless of their behavior.
Once you get through the screening process, you'll have a few candidates that you want to interview in person. Make sure each of these people gives you a list of references of at least five people. Tell them they can be anybody they want, except for relatives. Make sure to ask these references for examples of why this person would be worth your money to hire.
When you finally sit down and interview them, they've got to impress you. Remember, you don't need to hire somebody if you don't find anybody that qualifies. Keeping running the ad until you get a qualified candidate. If you've been looking for a while and you haven't found anybody, this can only mean two things. One is that your expectations are too high, or the money you are offering is too low.
Hiring people can be difficult, but when you finally find the right person for the job who helps your business grow, it can be really profitable. So keep looking for the right person, and don't give up.
