The Growing Demand For Nurse Entrepreneurship

What is Nurse Entrepreneurship?

Nurse entrepreneurs work for themselves and pursue initiatives related to healthcare. Nurse entrepreneurs start businesses and offer services to communities, schools, corporations, private individuals and other medical professionals. They devise business plans to receive funding and facilitate growth of their businesses. Many nurse entrepreneurs earn an income without working directly for a medical practice or hospital. They do not receive benefits from a particular hospital or private practice as nurse entrepreneurs.

Nurse entrepreneurs obtain their degrees from accredited nursing schools but may also combine their degrees with business. Business degrees may give nurse entrepreneurs a competitive advantage in establishing unique businesses. Otherwise, nurse entrepreneurs will work in traditional settings on a contractor-type basis.

Does Demand Exist for Nurse Entrepreneurs?

The demand for nurse entrepreneurs is growing. As the demand increases, more physicians, schools, corporations and hospitals are looking for nurses to address demand spikes in the healthcare field. The aging population and the economy have fueled the demand for nurses.

Traveling nurses are growing in demand because physicians cannot afford to keep nurses on staff full-time. Instead, nurses will spend only a certain amount of time on-staff as needed. Traveling nurses must work independently. Because traveling nurses do not receive benefits, traveling nurses are preferred by many organizations because they keep the costs low.

What are Some Examples of Nurse Entrepreneurs?

There are numerous examples of nurse entrepreneurs to provide insight into the field. Here are a few:

Nurse Entrepreneurs Educate the Community about Diabetes. Nurse entrepreneurs may devise business plans to help serve people in communities who are suffering from diabetes. Business plans may include ways to raise capital and provide information on diabetes symptoms and proper management of diabetes through nutrition and insulin shots. Blood tests may also be administered to the community to diagnose patients.

In this scenario, nurses may enter the communities to provide a service at a discounted or complimentary rate. Alternatively, the service may be offered at the standard rate but offer convenience to the targeted community. Nurse entrepreneurs earn an income through sponsorships or other means while offering the community a service.

Nurse Entrepreneurs Help with Long-Term Care. Nurse entrepreneurs may also serve private individuals in their homes who need long-term care. Private nurse entrepreneurs may be hired to care for patients with chronic illnesses. Cancer, heart disease or other chronic illnesses may require long-term care. Other nurse entrepreneurs may specialize and address issues concerning nutrition and geriatrics in a private setting.

Traveling nurses may be hired by companies to perform wellness checks for employees or urine tests for new hires. Physical exams may also be performed by nurses. When there is a shortage, traveling nurses may travel to public schools, colleges or universities to provide care.

Benefits of Being a Nurse Entrepreneur

Traveling nurses have a more flexible schedule and can spend more time with their families. They work when opportunities are available. Some opportunities may require a full-time schedule, and other opportunities may require a part-time schedule. The schedule will depend on the client's needs. If the schedule is too rigorous or not enough hours, nurse entrepreneurs may decline until a better opportunity arises.

Nurses earn a lucrative part-time income and can choose the jobs they prefer most. A full-time nurse has no flexibility in location or community served. These are the primary reasons for pursing nurse entrepreneurship.
