What All Great Training Shoes Have in Common

If you want to spend more time running and less time rubbing your feet and bandaging up your blisters, you need to get the right training shoes. The right shoes will let you stay out on the streets longer, run farther, train harder and get in better shape. Here are three things that all great training shoes have in common:

Comfort is key. Not too big, not too small, you need to know your exact size and shape of your feet so that you can find just the right shoe to match. If your feet are exceptionally wide or narrow or long or short, you should know that and find shoes that fit accordingly. This will lead to a snugger fit, less blisters and less soreness overall.

Soft, cushioned soles are of the utmost importance. A good, soft landing will prevent a lot of bruising in the long run and will help provide a little shock absorption to take the pressure off of your knees and ankles. A good, thick rubber sole should be enough. They're always putting out new shoes with air cushions and pumps and all sorts of gimmicks, but the truth is that as long as you have sufficient padding, you should do just fine.

Your best bet for a perfectly shaped floor for the shoe is actually to just go with as flat a shoe as possible. This sounds contrary to what you might have learned about shoes from a million athletic shoe ads, but the truth is that a good, flat shoe will make it feel more like running on soft ground with your bare feet, which is ultimately better for your bones and muscles. If you need support, you can get inserts that are specifically built for people with your shape of foot and your particular walking patterns. Otherwise, a flat shoe should do the job just fine, or barring that, a shoe that provides exactly the kind of support that your foot needs.

Buying the right shoes is really just a matter of finding a pair that feel good on your feet. If they look good, too, then that's a great bonus. Just make sure that whatever shoes you go with provide a snug fit with a little room to breath, sufffiicient padding, and a floor that doesn't force your foot into an uncomfortable, awkward, or even painful and harmful positions so you much be careful.
