Before the computer age, people handled work with people in other cities or countries through phone calls, regular postal service or face to face meetings. For people located in different areas or countries to work on the same project, every desktop involved in a project required the same setup. From the software applications to the storage capacity to security and power back-up, each person had a replica of the others. Even with the expense of all these redundant machines, updating everyone with new information had to be done in a serial fashion, hoping that the changes were compatible with one another.
As new as work over a network was, something different had to be conceived to make the concept of team projects work in real time.
