Prince2 Structure

Prince2 Structure is composed of 4 components, which are, principles, themes, processes and project environment.

The principles:

These are the central good practices which are the essence of Prince2. There are 7 in all. They are 'continued business justification', 'learn from experience', 'defined roles and responsibilities', 'manage by stages', 'manage by exception' and 'focus on products' and 'tailor to suit the project environment'.

The themes:

They are taken care of continually in the project and in parallel with the routine project management tasks. They refer to the reasons why certain areas need particular treatment. There are 7 in total. They are 'Progress', 'Risk', 'Organization', 'Quality', 'Plans', 'Change' and 'Business Case'.

The processes:

Here you will locate processes for step by step progression throughout the full project lifecycle from beginning to closure. They consist of check-lists of suggested tasks, products (the outputs) and applicable responsibilities. They are first mentioned in 'Introduction to processes' and later dealt with in 7 areas. They are 'Initiating a project', 'Starting up a project', 'Directing a project', 'Controlling a stage', 'Managing a Stage Boundary', 'Managing Product Delivery', and 'Closing a Project'.

Tailoring PRINCE2 to the project environment:

Any project is individual and Prince2 knows that. It is universal and may be tailored to large scale or small projects. It concentrates on fashioning Prince2 to an individual project from the angle of Project Board members.

Not included:

Prince2 does not seek to deal with all facets of project management. Some areas are purposely avoided. They are, 'specialist aspects', 'detailed techniques' and 'leadership techniques'. Special features need to be recognized and taken into the scope of the project. Areas like engineering models or procurement techniques can be integrated with the application of Prince2.

Detailed techniques:

Several project management methodologies are described in great detail in other places and can be used as a solid backing of the Prince2 Structure. For instance, in planning you could employ critical path analysis or earned value analysis. If a technique is determined by its Prince2 procedure it is included, for example, the quality review and product-based planning techniques. Note that within Prince2 a 'product' is a quantifiable output, that is, a deliverable, and must not be confused with the product breakdown structure as referred to in other project management procedures. The last mentioned is a listing of activities with related timescales establishing a schedule.

Leadership capability:

With regard to some capabilities it is quite hard to define them by a distinct process, such as, leadership and motivation. Once more, these themes are examined in great detail elsewhere and may deviate tremendously according to the circumstance and the expertise and background of the individual person.

Prince2 benefits:

In summary, the Prince2 approach consists of established and proven best practice and governance for project management. It is generic and can be applied to any sort of project along with specialized and industry focussed models. Also, it stresses the benefit demands of any sort of project by means of the Business Case.
