When you are thinking about getting organized, there is no time like the present. Organization keeps your home tidier, and it also helps you store your items neatly while keeping them in good repair. While you do need a few tools for getting organized, you'll find that it is less arduous than you might think! Starting with a few plastic storage containers, you can turn any area of your home into an organized, tidy space.
First, start by sorting your things into three piles. The first pile is for items that you keep, the second is for items that you want to give away or sell, and the third is for items that you are planning to throw away. In most areas, the "keep" pile is the largest, but don't be surprised if one of the other two is larger. No matter what item you pick up, it need to go into one of these three piles.
Dispose of the "give away" and the "throw away" pile immediately. The longer you keep them in your home, the more likely it is that you will simply hang on to them. Once you have gotten those items out of the way, you'll have a lot more space to work with.
Now it is time to go through your "keep" pile. Decide on where the items are going to be kept permanently. One problem that many people have is that they don't have a permanent location for their things. Without a permanent location, things simply float around until they end up shoved into a corner and forgotten. This is a good way to develop a real problem with clutter. The space that you choose for each item should be accessible but out of the way. If the item in question is only used every so often, you can put it in a place that is harder to reach, like an attic or a basement.
At this point, you may realize that you have less storage space than you think. This is where more shelving and plastic storage containers come in. When you are invested in reducing your mess and your clutter, your organization doesn't need to look pretty at first. Simply organize the things you want to keep and start putting them away.
Organizing your living space is not something that takes place overnight. It takes time and patience. It is important not to get bogged down in the middle, so designate small areas that you can clean in a short period of time. Even cleaning for as little as ten minutes every day can make a huge difference to your space. Remember that consistency is key. If you start a cleaning project, remember to see it all the way through to the end. Leaving everything lying around is only going to contribute to making a bigger mess, and that can make things even harder to take care of later on.
Getting organized is not something that happens all at once. It takes time and effort, and when you are first getting started, it can seem like you are not making any progress at all. Remember that it does not happen overnight. Every day, however, you are getting better, and once you have a routine to stick to, things will get much, much easier.
