Anyone who has been involved in internet marketing for any time at all has been through the gamut of emotions: excitement, wonder, frustration, feeling overwhelmed, depressed, and feeling like quitting. My great friend and mentor, Bill Gower, whom I mention on a regular basis in my articles, suggested that if I wanted to be successful, I should look at other successful people, and make a list of the qualities that I see in them that I believe made them successful. Truthfully, there are lot.
So, in sitting down to write this article, I thought I would challenge myself to ask the question, "What is the MOST important quality a successful internet marketer can have?" How would you answer this? Maybe you think great intelligence, creativity, imagination, money, know-how, great writer, technology skills, or something else, and all of those are great qualities.
For me, deciding what is the one quality I would have to have is a tough one, but I decided that if I could have one quality most of all, it would be tenacity. Maybe you haven't heard this term before. The dictionary says that tenacity is "persistent in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something valued or desired". It's really "stick-to-it-iveness".
Although I'm really not a big fan of the guy, Ross Perot said this: Most people give up just when they're about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game, one foot from a winning touchdown." That's really true of many things, and I can think of a number of times in life that I have fallen victim to this.
Persistence (tenacity) is what seems to me to be the difference in success and failure. In almost any endeavor we undertake this is true, but it is especially true in internet marketing, and here's why: When we are new to internet marketing, we are lured into a number of marketing strategies by others that convince us that success in internet marketing requires less effort than success in other kinds of businesses. There's some special exception to the rule that success is dependent upon hard work. Many people go into internet marketing because they don't want to work hard, but even more go in believing the marketing lie that you can be successful in internet marketing without working hard. I'm here to tell you this isn't true. Yes, you can leverage your time so that you can earn more money than you could working in a traditional "job", but you simply can't do it without hard work. Hard work learning your trade (how to properly market on the internet) hard work building the infrastructure (websites, articles, other programs) and using the fruits of your hard work (income) to re-invest in building your business … just like if you owned a pie shop or a CPA firm. And once people discover this many become frustrated, and give up.
Marketing on the internet is different from traditional marketing, but it's similar in that the longer your consistently do it, the better your pay-off. And in order to accomplish this, you have to have tenacity. So, if you've involved yourself in this kind of wacky business, take heart, keep at it, and don't quit. Chances are you are one foot from a winning touchdown.
