Getting Started
The first thing that must be done when creating a website is some careful planning. Before doing anything else, it is important to do a little bit of research and planning for the site. This way, the proper content and purpose for the site can be developed. If the business or entrepreneur does not know why a website is being developed, it will most likely be unsuccessful. This could involve researching keywords, deciding what products will be offered on the site and how the site will be built.
Domain and Hosting
After the site has a general direction and outline chosen, the next step in the process is to register a domain and get a hosting package. The domain is the web address that visitors will type into their browser in order to access a website. The domain should be something that is easy to remember and something that relates to the subject of the website. Once a domain is registered, the website needs a hosting package. This can be purchased from a Web hosting company.
Content Management
Once the domain is purchased, it must be directed to the Web hosting package for the site. At that point, a content management system must be used to create the website itself. This can be done by downloading the content management system to the Web server. For example, Wordpress is a common content management system that is used to create the website itself.
Building Content
After the content management system is set up and the basic framework for the site is in place, the webmaster can then begin building the content for the site. This part of the process is often the most involved. Content is king in the world of the Internet and the content on a site must be different than anything else out there. This could come in the form of written articles, videos, audio files, software programs and a lot of other features that could be added in.
Considerations
Once a site has been built, it must be continually updated and added to in order to remain irrelevant. If the site owner hopes to get traffic from search engines, the site will need new content added regularly, in most cases. In addition to building content, the website owner must also get inbound links from other sites in order to build the site's reputation. Search engines look at many different factors when determining how sites will rank. This requires the webmaster to continually be improving the site and looking at outside factors when building the site.
If a site starts to get some traffic, it can then be monetized in a number of ways. Products can be sold directly from the site or commissions can be earned by recommending other people's products for sale. Advertising space can be sold and the site can be optimized to generate more revenue in the future.
