1. Make a list of what is essential. Think about the minimum amount of furniture you will need. These include items that would make it difficult to work efficiently if you did not have them. The important thing to remember when buying on a budget is that if you can work efficiently without it, don't buy it.
2. Draw a floor plan of the office area and work out where everything will be placed. This will make selecting furniture easier by showing you just how much space each piece will take.
3. Now that you have a good idea of what furniture your office should have, it's time to think about financing the purchase. If you have a tight budget and cannot buy it outright, consider renting or leasing as an option.
4. Always choose functionality over appearance when buying on a budget. Sometimes the best-looking furniture is not very comfortable, or might not be useful in the long run.
5. For home offices, you may already have some furniture you can use. For example, maybe you have a comfortable chair that has excellent back support sitting unused in the basement or garage. Take it out, clean it up and use it. You will then be able to cross that item off of the purchase list.
6. You can choose to be creative for home offices. Instead of buying a desk, you can get a large, flat board and put it on top of two storage cabinets. What a great way to create a desk and have storage space as well. Or, ask friends or relatives if they have any office-type furniture they are no longer using. Perhaps you have an old baby crib or dresser you can trade.
7. Buying used furniture is the best way to save money. There are plenty of places to look for used office furniture. Check the classifieds section of the newspaper. Many times you will find garage or estate sales advertised there. The Internet is a another good source to find just about anything. Look for auction sites, or search for local furniture discount stores.
8. If you really do need, or want, to buy new furniture, avoid buying the full retail price whenever possible. Wait for the large department stores to offer special sales. Sometimes display models that have minor flaws can sell for a nice discount price.
Even if you are working with a limited budget, you will get the functionality you need with your office furniture. If you make a plan and stick to it, furnishing your office does not need to be a difficult task.
