The Dynamics Of Self Publishing - Part Three

If you saw Parts One and Two we examined an overview of the dynamics of self publishing and split it up into three steps…

* Writing the publication's content

* Preparing the completed manuscript for printing and distribution including preparing the design and all contents, e.g. illustrations, Table of Contents, end matter, covers.

* Proposing a marketing and promotion plan and putting it into action.

We then looked at the key characteristics of the initial two steps.

Now it's time to look at step three, marketing and selling - the exciting steps. You do not want all that authoring effort to be wasted, you are wanting to get your precious book in the hands of as many readers as possible - and that's even if you are not concerned about making any money from the exercise.

If you are anything like me then you will have been thinking about your marketing since before you word processed your first word. The reader must be at the forefront of your mind during the preparation of your book if you are to maximize the opportunity to achieve volume sales.

Now's the time to crystallize all those thoughts and to bring them together so you can build your marketing plan. The practicalities of the sales process should be looked after by your online publisher, all you have to do is to drive traffic to that sales URL.

To start with your online publisher will have their own website and you will create some information, such as a book outline, to help them. The publisher will send feeds to other book publicizing services as well, so the advertising copy you send is very important. It is not necessary for it to be long - but it must be on message.

Now we are underway, but there's so much more to do. Here are some suggestions.

How about a book promotional website?. You will need a domain name relating to your book's theme and a web site hosting service, both of which can be achieved for a small number of dollars, - you will need to set up the various pages of the site. If you have not written or set up websites before you can find many online hosting services will give you simple templates for you to pick and then all you need to do is populate it with your promotional text.

Initially traffic does not come for free and immediately to a new website, you have to promote it in ways that will convince the main search engines that your website is worth ranking higher than others. See if you can find why other websites come up higher than yours when you do a Google search and act on that information. In fact, the sooner in the whole process that you do this the better your chances of success.

Have you considered blogging?. This is especially true if your topic is likely to be contentious and provoke comments on your blog from others. To get traffic start with one of the principal free services such as Blogger or WordPress as these are regularly visited by the main search engines. That means that you are likely to get ranked sooner rather than later. Be alert for 'comment spammers', site visitors who post worthless comments with the aim to get a link back to their own website. Make sure you regularly review your blog and post weekly yourself too to keep it active.

Here are many other things you can do such as:

* creating a Facebook Page to promote your blog and book.

* Comment on other blogs on the same topic

* Begin Tweeting

* Request your friends and family to add to your blog

Plenty to keep you busy.

Here's to your success!
