5 Top Tips For Creating An SEO Blog With A Purpose

Not every website benefits from an onsite blog but if yours is one that does you really need to make the most of it in more ways than one. Not only do your blog posts need to be entertaining and authoritative enough for readers to come back time and again, they need to have good quality SEO…just as the rest of your website will have.

So how do you create a useful SEO blog that encourages website visitors to return for the next instalment?

1. Make your blog content interesting and informative for people to read

You notice we say people here because at the end of the day a blog page on a website is primarily for the enjoyment of real people. Yes it can help immensely if each of your blog posts has top quality SEO applied to it, but the rest of your website should incorporate the majority of your SEO techniques.

Always keep in mind that the people reading your blog are going to be doing so because they want to know something, or learn something. This fact should give you a good starting point for your blog posts, but if you find yourself struggling one day concentrate on a specific SEO keyword that has ranked high in your search results and create a post around that.

2. Break your blog pages up to combat boredom

There's nothing worse than a 1000+ word blog post that is written as one long paragraph. You might have the biggest news in your industry to share, or you might have the answer to every problem in the world but if your readers get bored by the third line the information, and hence the blog post, is absolutely worthless. Always remember that readers tend to scan the content of a blog until they're convinced it is of interest to them; then they go back and read the page more thoroughly.

Adding bullet points, numbered lists, headings and subheadings are just a few of the ways you can easily make your blog posts more attractive to your readers. You can often fit in more SEO keywords this way as well which means the overall SEO of your website will improve as a result.

3. Update the blog section of your website regularly

The whole point of your blog - apart from improving your onsite SEO - is to attract visitors to your website before enticing them to return for more information. In order to do this you need to add fresh blog posts to your site on a regular basis so that your returning readers always have something new to read.

Not surprisingly the more blog posts you add the more likely your visitors are to stick around or come back at a later date for the next instalment. You'll also find the more posts you add the better your onsite SEO becomes and the better your onsite SEO the more website visitors (or blog followers) you should get.

Hopefully after a while you'll start to build a following of people who make a point of visiting your site to read the blog.

4. Vary the content of the posts

If your blog followers know exactly what is coming in your next blog post they are less likely to return to read it than if it is a total surprise. For this reason you need to vary your content so that each post has a different format to the previous one. So for example, you might want to report an important news feature one day, write a 'hints and tips' article the next (complete with SEO of course), an opinion piece the following day and an informative 'how to' article to finish the week.

As long as your blog posts are easy to read (no industry-related words that layman people may not know), interesting and informative, and search engine optimised you can pretty much write what you want. Just remember to think about what your website visitors may be looking for and thus may want to read about.

5. Add appropriate images

Images and pictures are a great way of breaking content up and making a page look much more interesting. They can also be used to show technical aspects of a topic in an easy to understand way, which makes them a huge benefit to those readers who are trying to learn the basics from your blog.

Images can also be a huge bonus with regards to your onsite SEO though as you can easily optimise them for Google Images. By doing this you effectively open up another avenue to new followers who may initially be looking for an image but who may then get drawn into your blogging world.

In Summary

Onsite blog posts have many benefits, including improving your SEO efforts. You must take the time to write authoritative and interesting posts on a regular basis though otherwise readers aren't going to take the time to come back. If you're unsure about writing posts with a purpose you can always hire a professional writer to do it for you, or alternatively you can use the services of an SEO agency who will make sure your onsite SEO is exactly as it should be - including your all-important blogging page.
