• Review Utilities. Start by collecting your utility statements from the past year. Review bills from water use, gas and electricity. Most bills show the average amount of energy used so you can see if your levels are high. If this energy is not available on your statements you can call each energy company. Knowing where your levels of energy are high will help you know where to focus your attention.
• Company-Related Travel. Almost all companies have some level of travel involved while conducting business. Even though you can't eliminate all business travel, having more fuel efficient vehicles and having well planned travel routes will help cut emissions which will reduce your footprint.
• Do You Recycle? The garbage that has to be hauled away from your business contributes toward your ecological footprint because gas and energy is needed to pick it up and haul it away. When your company recycles, reuses and repurposes as much as possible you can create a large reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.
• Energy-Savers. Even though energy saving appliances, light bulbs and other equipment may be initially more expensive, you'll actually save money in the long run because of the savings on your power bill. Energy-savers will help you reduce the amount of carbon dioxide your business contributes to the environment by running more efficiently. You can also educate your staff to ensure that lights and equipment are being turned off when not in use.
To effectively reduce your company's carbon footprint you must first be aware of what is contributing toward it. A few simple measures like these are some of the steps you can take to increase awareness amongst your staff and to make changes so your business becomes even more ecologically friendly. As you revisit your energy consumption practices throughout the year, you'll be able to continue altering your practices with a focus on moving your business toward the goal of becoming increasingly green.
