Some Speculative Ideas For Webhosting For The Next Twelve Months

The predictions for web hosting in 2012 are that it might just continue into 2013 in spite of all the doomsday prophecies. Seriously though, there are unlikely to be major revolutions. In general there will still be a trend towards fewer providers with greater resources. This will be driven by cloud services which will continue to grow in popularity. There will however be a greater number of middle men as content management and reselling becomes easier.

Cloud website hosting is becoming an attractive option for small to mid size companies. The biggest advantage is scalability and it is possible to pay only for what is used rather than for a fixed amount every month. There is no risk of the website going down if a fixed bandwidth limit is reached but at the same time you don't have to pay for capacity that you don't use.

This in the end might become the only option in the end if it where not for two things. Although a big selling point is that managed services are provided and the company does not have to have a dedicated IT person to manage from their side, there are still some companies who still want this type of control. There is also the perception that it is less secure than dedicated servers.

There are drawbacks which still slow down its growth however. There will always be access to the website regardless of what the traffic is but you are not always going to be sure of where your data is located. It can also be more expensive than using a shared server which would probably be adequate for most peoples needs.

There is the fear that if information is hosted on servers which are located in foreign countries then the same laws will not apply to its protection and you have no control over this. There is also the concern that having such a wide system with lots of data transfer also creates unnecessary security risks. This might not actually be such a big concern though.

If the trend does continue however it will also lead to a lot fewer providers who will have far greater resources spread over many different locations. As it will become very efficient to manage data in this way it will also become harder for smaller operators to compete. There will become a much bigger scope for resellers at the same time.

This is not likely to all happen by next year but is likely to become a trend. There will still be a lot of demand for VPS (Virtual Private Server) and co-location. It makes far less sense for companies to invest in their own data centers. Once you reach capacity on your own system it becomes a big problem to upgrade, whereas when you are renting, upgrading becomes very easy.

As content management becomes easier it is likely that there will also be more and more people offering design and management with web hosing included. The predictions for web hosting in 2012 are that these trends will start to appear. Overall there is likely to be a general stability however.
