Business cards have at least two sides*. This is a provable fact. And yet most business cards are printed on one side only, and the other side is blank.
To some people, this is as it has been since time immemorial and this is how it ought to be forevermore.
To others, this is a waste of a perfectly good marketing opportunity.
Those who like the one-sided cards generally want to get the basics in the hands of those they contact: name, title, company they work for, cell phone, office phone, email, fax, website, twitter. The bare minimum.
Other people say: Wait a minute! That's just a starting point. With two sides, there is so much room to do so much more. How much more?
- Your logo, big enough to take up the whole reverse side of the card. A logo you can see across the room. It makes a statement. It raises curiosity. It associates you with the symbol of your company or organization;
- A unique design that has a connection to what you do. If you're a musician, maybe a series of musical notes;
- A picture which connotes something about the history or origin of your industry, or a picture of your industry's tools of the trade;
- The same basic information on the reverse side as on the obverse (front) side, except done in an entirely different way. This could be a great way to showcase your originality;
- A highly abstract image on the reverse side;
- An example of something that you have produced which represents your very best work. If you're an architect, this should be easy;
- The name of your firm in a larger size, or in a more stylized design;
- A summary statement about your services - three or four words. A motto or slogan;
- A listing of the key services that you or your company provides;
- A logo of your national organization, if you are a subsidiary or a franchisee of that larger organization. It's a good way to illustrate that you operate independently, but that you are backed by a national firm;
- A solid color, which could be vivid and bold. Or perhaps a solid color with a small logo on it, to attract the eye.
The point is that a business card doesn't have to convey "just the basics". You can use it to highlight your own creativity, your affiliation with others, your symbology, your personality, your values, your appreciation of ideas.
Your two-sided business card is a great way to market yourself as a unique entity, one worth paying attention to.
*There is such a thing as a four-sided business card, which looks like a little greeting card turned on its side, with the top side a little smaller.
