Business Consulting: Four Golden Principles

Copyright (c) 2012 Joe Maldonado

A business will succeed only if it has a strategy and this applies to both small and big businesses. They need to have a plan which will state the following: (a) what exactly is the company's goal, (b) what is to be done to achieve that goal and (c) what the company needs to keep doing to achieve the goal. The problem with most of the companies is that they fail to conduct a thoughtful and complete analysis for development of a strategy for every aspect of the business and as a result of this; they look for business consulting services that are actually capable of doing this.

It is because of this reason the consultants need to have an understanding of the business which is clear and far comprehensive than the business owners themselves. The consultants need to understand what exactly the business is all about. The same principle applies to the marketing consultants because they also work towards the growth of the business in both proximate and distant future.

So, some basic principles come into play. They are mentioned below:

The first rule of thumb is to have a thorough knowledge of the business. The business consulting services need to have an inside out knowledge of the business. They must have complete knowledge of the following:

What exactly does the company do,

Who are those people who do it,

What is the unique selling point of the business, i.e., what makes the company different from other?

Second principle: The business consulting services need to know what exactly the business sector is in which the company operates. It is very essential for the consulting services to have a very acute knowledge of the past trends and the future trends of the business sector in which the company operates. A complete knowledge of history will help in future planning!

Third principle: Finding the current trends of management and pointing out all the flaws without any hint of hesitation and then fixing them. This means that the consulting services need to know the following:

Current management strategy for cash flow and how exactly the company should manage the cash flow,

How the company is managing the employees and how the company should manage them,

How efficiently does the company manage the expectations of the customers?

Fourth, the consulting firm must have an attitude and they must be able to instill the same attitude in the business or the company seeking consultation. Setting daring and yet realistic goals and creating a mindset needed to achieve those goals can be done only with some attitude. The attitude must be of integrity and perseverance that will make a strategy successful. This will not be easy and there will be many hurdles but overcoming those hurdles is what will generate success. There should not be any fear, neither in the mind of the consulting firm and nor in the mind of the business!
