Alternative Fuels Are Staying

Efforts to create different types of alternative fuels have become one of the biggest areas in the auto industry. Scientists are working hard to make fuels that burn clean and are safe for the environment. So far, they have come up with several that are good for the environment and also provide a great advantage to car owners.

Of all of the alternative fuels, the most well-known is ethanol. It is also called grain alcohol, and it is generally made from either corn or soybeans. There are places that have fuel that is a combination of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline which is called E85. For people who use it, they save on gas mileage because ethanol burns much cleaner than gasoline. Even though there is gasoline in E85, it still burns much cleaner. Besides corn and soybeans, plant materials from logging, discarded paper and other organic materials can be used to make ethanol. Since they both are alcohol-based products, methanol is a type of alternative fuel very similar to ethanol.

Methanol is also known as wood alcohol and is made from wood or coal. Methanol can be made cheaply from natural gas or propane. Another fuel that is rising in popularity is propane or compressed natural gas. Like oil, this fuel can be found underground. Propane is not a liquid but a true gas like air. Its popularity has grown over the years since it is an environmentally safe fuel. An alternative fuel that has been around for a long time is old-fashioned electricity.

Due to environmental concerns, electric vehicles are coming back in popularity, even though they have been around for a long time. The power of the electric car comes from batteries instead of burning fuel. An electric car may require 12 to 24 batteries to power it. An alternative fuel that shows a lot of promise is hydrogen. Most of the vehicles using this fuel today are experimental, but there is much potential for this energy source, which is rather unique. The advantages of hydrogen are that it is easy to produce and it is very light. Hydrogen could become the next big alternative fuel that can be used for powering your vehicles.

These are just a few of the many alternative fuels on the market today. With everyone concerned with global warming, every effort is being made to create even better and more efficient alternative fuels. The popularity of alternative fuels will drive the technology to the point where gasoline will no longer be a reasonable option.
