They are actually used to heat up the cathode within the fitting, or to cool it down if it is necessary, and will be used for those lamps which usually stay on throughout the day and night. Factories which run a twenty four hour process will usually have these and each shift takes over from the last without shutting anything down. By leaving them on permanently, it was found that the huge boost of power which ignites the gas is what was actually costing more money than leaving them on permanently, oddly enough. Any energy savings which can be made in the manufacturing process usually means cheaper prices for the consumer too eventually.
Tungsten bulbs really take a lot of power to keep them up and running. Even if they are left on, they usually burn out eventually because it is the resistance which lights up the bulb. Of course, with gas filled bulbs, there is no such problem so they manage to last a whole lot longer. The one thing that upsets most people with the gas filled bulb though is the constant flickering on and off. To a lot of people, this is totally unnoticeable, but for the sensitive person, this will cause severe headaches or even migraine. Those people who suffer from epilepsy could also have a spell triggered too so they have to be extremely careful about where they work and in what conditions.
Although most people do not like the look of the tubes in these fittings, they have gotten round this problem by putting decorative glass in front of them. This does not disguise the flicker though so some people will use the double unit where one bulb lights while the other one is off. In other words, they cycle opposite to each other which eliminates the flickering. All this needs those pieces mentioned at the beginning though so one should look for the double fittings online too. The great thing about fittings of this kind, and the replaceable parts for sure, is that it saves a whole lot of energy. The world is currently going through an energy crisis so any small savings that can be made is a good bonus point.
By installing more of these lamps, and by cutting down on switching them on and off, we should at least be able to prolong whatever energy stocks we have left until the scientists come up with a better solution eventually.
