Start by clearing the route you will be using to get the instrument through the house, out of the house, into the moving truck, out of the truck and into the new location. There should be no other furniture in the way and no obstructions. Remove any rugs or floor coverings that could get dragged or trip up anyone. Lock pets away if need be and prop open all of the doors along the way. Have someone who will not be helping with the heavy lifting walk in front of the movers and give verbal directions.
Move the instrument away from other furniture and the walls. You need to create enough space to walk comfortably all the way around the instrument. Most instruments this large are on wheels, so moving it just a short distance out from the wall should be relatively easy. Push the instrument when moving and avoid pulling on the front legs because they are fragile and might break. There should be at least three feet of space all the way around the instrument.
Now is the time to load it up. Tip is back to about a 45 degree angle. Obviously, there should be several people helping by this time in the move. At least two should be behind the instrument to prevent tipping. Another person needs to slide the moving tool under the front at an angle to about the midway point. The pedals need to be clear of the moving tool and there should be no weight resting on the pedals.
Lean the instrument back to level on the moving tool. One person should support everything to keep it from moving. Shift the weight of the instrument so it is centered and feels stable. Next, run reinforced straps underneath the moving tool and around the back of the instrument. There should be blankets or moving pads protecting the instrument from the metal buckles or hooks on the straps. Roll teh entire contraption to its destinatino. Avoid bumps and door sill if possible, but use a slight lifting motion if necessary to prevent scraping and shifting.
