Improve Employee Morale Through Increased Verbal Communication

Employee morale is being damaged by an overwhelming amount of electronic devices in the workplace.

With the rise in smart technology enabling employees to collaborate with colleagues and friends through social media, calls and texts, more workers are damaging their performance by becoming engrossed in these devices.

The main environment in which employee performance is deteriorating is in face-to-face meetings where many are guilty of staying glued to the technology instead of interacting with a client or colleague.

Such meeting misdemeanours includes sending text messages, listening to voicemails and even checking emails and these transgressions are more likely to occur when a conference takes place over the internet.

Younger employees are most guilty of this bad behaviour due to their affinity with modern technology although it is not uncommon amongst older workers who can still be caught texting when they should be communicating with colleagues.

All employees will agree that disrupting workplace proceedings by answering a mobile phone is poor etiquette although they are unlikely to apply this attitude to themselves when in the same circumstance.

One reason why employees are committed to engaging with their electronic devices is that they feel concerned about missing out work and social activities if they are disconnected from their inbox for any period of time.

The majority of people are likely to connect to stay in touch with work over the weekend or during time off and this will actually damage performance as it will result in fatigue and could lead to sickness.

Too much digital distraction is also likely to damage employee performance by stopping them from completing work projects and restricting their creative input with information overload.

Employers should educate their workforce about the appropriate use of electronic devices by establishing policies which state how and when such technology ought to be used and when it is out of place.

Workers must be encouraged to communicate verbally whenever possible instead of sending short emails and instant messages when sitting in the same room as this will improve morale and productivity as a result.

Businesses must be wary about going too far and banning social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook as these can be especially useful for communicating with clients and customers.
