One of the most tried and true methods for finding a reliable person to work in or on your house is to ask good friends. Do not just ask casual acquaintances that you may never see again, especially if you do not have any personal experience with them. Their idea of good service may not match up to your expectations. But, if you ask a close friend, one that you hang around with, attend social events with, or work with them, you will more than likely get better results. First of all, you know where they live, and they would not give you the name of someone who did a poor job for them. And secondly, there is a trust level between friends, so you know you can rely on their judgment.
If you are new to an area, or you do not have any friends that know a reliable service person, another alternative is to call your local building department or Chamber of Commerce. They may or may not have a short list of reliable businesses that follow the building codes, get the proper licenses for their work, and have a good record of completion. Homeowners will generally complain to the building department if their contractor or service company does a poor job.
Another method finding a contractor or service company that is being used less and less is the Yellow Pages. Just remember that those who buy the biggest ads do not necessarily do the best work. In fact, in certain instances those who have had the largest ads have also had the worst records. If you choose to use this method of finding workers to fix your porcelain facility or your water heater, make sure you check with the Better Business Bureau. You can also do a search on the internet which is very popular these days. You can look up reviews or testimonials about a particular company or websites that compiles customer reviews of local companies or businesses.
Of course, just about everyone has a talented neighbor or brother-in-law who can do all but the most complicated jobs? Replacing a faucet in your bathtub or installing a new vanity is a walk in the park for them. If that is your case, you are living the dream.
