You are probably better off sticking with new models if you don't want to deal with problems later on. It is a major pain when your washing machine, dryer, or refrigerator stops working because you have to find a way to get them out of your place while moving a new one in. A graded appliance is probably your best bet if you are on a really strict budget, as they are essentially new units that have a cosmetic defect like a scratch or a dent on them. They'll still work fantastically, but they will cost you less than a new unit in excellent condition.
A lot of people want to know the pros and cons of Graded appliances vs new kitchen appliance. You really have to make the decision on a case by case basis. For example, a store might have a really nice looking French door refrigerator on display that is out of your price range. However, if it has a very inconspicuous dent or scratch that you didn't even notice when you first checked it out, then you are getting a deal. The same is true if the defect is on a side that would not be visible where you would put it.
When you find this kind of deal, you should really take it because you're effectively getting a high quality appliance that you otherwise couldn't afford for a price that would never be possible otherwise. Now, if the defect is in a place that is easy to see and you noticed it right away, you will have a much harder decision to make. Can you live with looking at that every day as long as you have the appliance? Will you be embarrassed to have people over because of the way it looks?
If the appliance is going to be something you're ashamed of, then you should simply stick with a new unit that you can afford. Granted, it won't be the same model that was out of your price range, but at least you will not have to worry whenever you have people over about whether or not they will notice it and what they will think. Either way though, you can take comfort in the fact that the kitchen appliances you are getting is going to work equally well for a long time, regardless of the way that it looks on the outside. That is why either option is an excellent choice, and recommended over a used model.
